Robert Redford directed this loving tribute to the era of TV quiz shows, dramatizing the scandal that rocked the nation over the game “21.” Fine performances from a stellar ensemble cast, led by Ralph Fiennes as the morally challenged professor who starts down a dark road of cheating, John Turturro as the brainiac who is dethroned as the show’s champion, and Rob Morrow as the government man investigating Turturro’s claims of a fix. Well-made and thought-provoking, with Paul Attanasio’s (TV’s Homicide: Life on the Street) screenplay providing laughs as well as some great drama. One of the year’s best films!

Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff) directed this brilliant and unsettling stage adaptation (by Doug Wright) focused on the internment of the notorious erotica writer The Marquis de Sade (played with award-worthy relish by Geoffrey Rush) in a cruel mental asylum run by a sadistic doctor (Michael Caine) and an uncertain young Abbe (Joaquin Phoenix). de Sade’s twisted obsession with a virginal young woman (Kate Winslet) pulls much of the film’s attention, as well as (oddly enough) audience sympathies. Sumptuously designed and wonderfully written and acted!

A working-class, drug-addled “Mod” member in 1965 London finds that the only place for him is with like-minded friends, despite an impending gang war with the rival “Rockers.” Set to a high concept album by rock gods The Who, Franc Roddam’s film is like a heavily watered-down version of “A Clockwork Orange” with a hotter soundtrack.

Sidney Lumet’s highly-charged melodrama weaves the paths of a brash young Assistant District Attorney (Timothy Hutton), his former lover (Jenny Lumet), a crime boss who protects her (Armand Assante), and the corrupt detective (Nick Nolte), whom Hutton is trying to catch in the act. Adapted by Lumet from Edwin Torres’ book, this violent and ultra-profane crime story is well-worth checking out.
